Dental Health Examination
Regular dental check-ups are the best way to take care of your oral health. Even if you think your teeth are in good shape at the moment, it’s still a good idea to see a dentist, as they may be able to spot and treat issues before they start causing you any problems.
What is a dental check-up?
A dental check-up is a preliminary examination of your mouth and teeth designed to flag up anything that needs attention and/or treatment.
Regular check-ups are a must for all patients, but some people will need more check-ups than others, depending on their risk for dental disease. Your dentist will be able to work out a schedule that’s right for you.
What's involved with a Dental Check-up
- Your dentist will ask about your oral health since your last examination and whether you have experienced any pain or noticed any other problems.
- Your dentist will perform a thorough extra and intra-oral examination. This will include a check of not only your teeth, but also your soft tissues (including your gums, cheeks and tongue). This is to screen for oral cancer and other soft tissue conditions, that can often be painless so you may not know about them.
- From time to time your dentist will advise that x-rays of your teeth are taken to help spot early or hard to find problems, such as decay in between the teeth, or advancing gum disease.
- At the end of the appointment, your dentist will go through anything they’ve found as a result of their examination, and discuss what your treatment options may be. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions about your check up and/or treatment before you leave. Your dentist may also recommend one or more visits to the hygienist, if they feel this is indicated.
